Sega Toys Suspends Robot Cat Sales and Issues a Recall in Japan After Reports of a Burning Smell

Sega Toys is recalling their “KIMIT Ragdoll” line of robot pet cats in Japan because customer report a burning smell coming from their fake fur.

Sega Toys made some robot cats called the “KIMIT Ragdoll” line. They attempt to create real cats with synthetic fur so you can cuddle with them. They even purs, but their eyes lighting up is a little weird.

But now, two months after their February 29th, 2024 sale, these robot cats are being called back because people are smelling something like burning plastic coming from them.

It looks like the mix of electrical stuff and fake fur is making them get too hot and smell bad.

There is not any news of the cats catching fire, but Sega has issued to turn them off and go through the refund and returns policy.

The “KIMIT Ragdoll” line was meant to be a substitute for pets for retirees, people who are allergic to cats, and those living in an environment where having a pet is not feasible. They added sound effects and movements and had the robot react to cuddles and mimic the soothing feeling of interacting with real cats.

It’s unlucky that there’s a flaw causing the fake fur to burn and emit a bad smell. We all have to wait and see if Sega Toys, a division of the same company that created Sonic and the Genesis and Dreamcast consoles, will fix the problem and release a new version.
